Can you actually slow down ageing, or is longevity mostly just about eating well and exercising?
The question, asked by a man aged 30 to 44
I’m confused by all the longevity stuff online, there are so many ads. Are there actual treatments that can make a meaningful difference, or is it mostly lifestyle, is it like you take some medicine for this?
Nice question. Being sceptical is actually wise with all the ads out there. Ageing happens at the level of your cells, and there are some reasons why they speed up:
- Any chronic low-grade inflammation quietly damages your tissues.
- Mitochondrial decline is when the cell’s energy becomes less efficient.
- Insulin resistance is one strong reason for how well people age.
- Losing muscle happens in your 30s,affects strength, metabolism, and independence.
- Hormonal shifts
- Changes in gut health.
Honestly, lifestyle is the foundation. Exercising, good nutrition, sleep, and stress management help slow down ageing. The treatments can certainly help, but they cannot replace the foundation. Measuring bio markers and working towards it can make a big difference to how well you age.
Suggested Tests
- ApoB and lipoprotein(a)
- HbA1c and fasting insulin
- hs-CRP
- Liver function tests and an ultrasound of the abdomen
- Kidney function with cystatin C
- Vitamin D, vitamin B12 and a full thyroid panel
- DEXA scan
- VO2 max or a cardiopulmonary exercise test
- Grip strength
- Age-appropriate cancer screening
