Obesity

I’m 22 and worried about inheriting my family’s obesity. Is there a longevity plan my father and I could follow together?

Answered by Clinic Living Plus Medical Experts · 20 Oct 2026 · 2 min read
The question, asked by a man aged 18 to 29

My father has struggled with obesity for years, and honestly, nothing we’ve tried seems to work for him long-term. Seeing him go through this makes me worried that I could face the same problems as I get older. I’m still young and don’t have major health issues, so I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do now to reduce my future risk and whether a doctor can create a plan for both of us based on our individual health and family history.

Thinking of this early on and starting at 22 is quite thoughtful. Now here is why obesity runs in families.

Some genes affect appetite, fat storage, and metabolism.

Families share food, cooking methods, meal timings, and even activity levels.

Insulin resistance can start years before weight gain.

The same gut bacteria in the family can affect weight.

In your father’s case, long-standing weight issues often come with hidden factors that make weight loss harder. It can be insulin resistance, fatty liver, low testosterone, or sleep apnoea. These need to be identified and checked. A doctor can help create a plan for both of you. The plans will look totally different, but supporting each other matters.

Suggested Tests

  • HbA1c
  • fasting insulin
  • Lipid profile
  • TSH
  • Liver function tests
  • Vitamin D
  • Waist measurement and blood pressure

For your father:

  • HbA1c, fasting glucose
  • post-meal glucose
  • Fasting insulin
  • Lipid profile with ApoB
  • Liver function tests and an ultrasound of the abdomen
  • Kidney function and urine albumin to creatinine ratio
  • Full thyroid panel
  • Total testosterone
  • ECG
  • Sleep study
